Yani Tseng maintains one-shot advantage at halfway in Wegman's LPGA Championship

Battling a torrential downpour then a steady drizzle for nearly half her first nine holes, Yani Tseng followed her first-round-best 66 with a grinding performance on Friday.

After seeing her lead disappear in the morning session, Yani Tseng fought her way back into a place where she's been plenty comfortable this year.

The top-ranked Tseng overcame a double bogey on her ninth hole to shoot a 2-under 70 on Friday for a one-stroke lead over Pat Hurst after the second round of the Wegman's LPGA Championship, the tour's second major of the year.

Hurst had a 67. Morgan Pressel, Minea Blomqvist, and Hee Young Park were 6 under after 69s.

Battling a torrential downpour then a steady drizzle for nearly half her first nine holes, Tseng followed her first-round-best 66 with a gritty performance that put her at 8 under overall. She won the LPGA State Farm Classic two weeks ago for her second LPGA Tour victory of the year, and could become the first player since Lorena Ochoa in 2008 to follow a regular tournament victory with a win in a major.

"I feel a little bit disappointed in my round, but I hung in there," Tseng said. "I missed some short putts, and that's very disappointing. But I still have the lead, and I'm still very excited."

Hurst played in the morning before the heavy rain hit Locust Hill Country Club, and took a one-stroke lead before Tseng teed off on the back nine in the early afternoon.

Tseng shook off the inclement weather by reeling off three straight birdies to open a two-stoke edge over Hurst, but Tseng's game suddenly soured at the par-4 18th after her drive went into the left rough and under a tree, forcing her to punch out.

A nifty approach shot that stopped about 3 feet from the hole left her with a chance to salvage a bogey, but her putt rimmed out, and left her looking at the hole in disbelief.

She promptly regained her focus and grabbed the lead with a birdie at No. 1.

"I told myself, 'I have to make birdie,'" she said. "I looked up to the sky, kept my head up, and was thinking positive."

Tseng fell back into a tie with Hurst and eventually Pressel after bogeying her 14th hole, but at No. 8 she made the last of her five birdies on the day to head into the weekend with a slim lead.

Unlike Tseng, Hurst gave plenty of credit to her play on the green. She made two long putts on the day, including a 40-footer on her 17th hole (No. 8) that gave her a brief two-stroke edge over Tseng.

"I feel like I've been hitting the ball really well...the bottom line is not making any putts," said Hurst, who hasn't won a tournament since 2009. "I'm just thinking about playing some good golf and making some putts."

Hurst also holed a chip shot from the light fringe on No. 15 after her approach shot went over the green.

"I would really be excited if it was Sunday," she joked. "I've gained a little bit of confidence out there and feeling good."

Pressel moved into a brief second-place tie with Hurst after she birdied the par-5 17th hole, but then bogeyed 18 to send her back into third.

"I felt good out there and made a lot of good swings," she said. "I feel like I can keep the ball in play."

Defending champion Cristie Kerr shot her second straight 72 to make the cut. Michelle Wie also opened with consecutive 72s.

Expect Big Changes Along Offensive Line

The only certainty is that Pro Bowler Marshal Yanda will be back at right guard.


The play of the offensive line was a constant struggle for the Ravens this season.

From the start of his press conference Tuesday, Head Coach John Harbaugh pointed to the lack of a running game and poor protection for quarterback Joe Flacco as the team’s biggest issues this year.

To fix the problems, Harbaugh said that the line could go through a significant makeover this offseason.

“Everything is going to be on the table,” Harbaugh.

Free agency will dictate some moves along the line, as left tackle Eugene Monroe and right tackleMichael Oher are both at the end of their contracts. Center Gino Gradkowski and left guard A.Q. Shipley are still under contract, but Harbaugh indicated that they will have competition for starting jobs next season.

Pro Bowl right guard Marshal Yanda is the only definite starter.

“I think there will be a competitive situation pretty much at every spot on the offensive line except right guard,” Harbaugh said.



The other player who will likely get a starting job is Kelechi Osemele, who started seven games at left guard this season before a back injury landed him on injured reserve. He had back surgery to repair the problem, and is expected to be at full strength by the time the team begins the voluntary offseason program.

Osemele has experience at left guard and right tackle, and the Ravens still haven’t decided what they want his long-term position to be.

“He can play either one of those spots,” Harbaugh said. “I would assume that he will be in that lineup somewhere because he’s that kind of a player, but he’s got to come back and do it. Of course, he knows that.”

A top priority in the offseason is locking down a player at left tackle to protect Flacco’s blindside for years to come. The Ravens have been searching for a long-term solution at left tackle for several years, and Monroe could be the answer.

The Ravens traded fourth-and fifth-round picks to get Monroe this year, and he played well after making the transition to Baltimore. He has expressed interest in remaining in Baltimore, and the interest between the two sides is mutual.

The key is agreeing on a price, as Monroe could be in line for a big payday on the open market.

“I don’t think there’s any question that people feel like Eugene Monroe is a long-term answer at left tackle,” Harbaugh said. “Everybody around the league feels that way, and he’s here, he likes it here. He did a heck of a job.

“So, whether we’re able to do that or not, I think that will be addressed over the next couple of weeks. Like I said, I want every good player here, and he’s a good player. So, I want him here.”

Once the Ravens determine who will be left tackle, they also have some young linemen who could factor into the competition next year. Jah Reid and Rick Wagner are both mid-round draft picks who played tackle in college and could end up getting the right tackle spot. Ryan Jensen was a sixth-round pick who spent this season on the 53-man roster, but was not active for any game. Jensen could compete for a job at center or guard.

Harbaugh also made it clear that the Ravens plan to bring in other players through the draft or free agency.

“Every one of our guys, all of us understand in this league that it is a production business – coaches and players. We all have to be accountable for producing and winning,” Harbaugh said. “What we will do is we will find a way to be the best possible offense, offensive line, defense, defensive line, special teams that we can possibly be. And personnel is a big part of that.

“The best guys deserve to play, and the guys who are the best guys are the guys who play the best. And we’ve got to find those guys, and they know that.”

＜ISPSハンダワールドカップ 最終日◇24日◇ロイヤルメルボルンGC（7,046ヤード・パー71）＞

　オーストラリアにあるロイヤルメルボルンゴルフクラブで開催中の「ISPSハンダワールドカップ」の最終日。3日目に“66”をマークし通算9アンダーで単独首位に立ったジェイソン・デイ（オーストラリア）がこの日は1アンダーでラウンド、通算10アンダーで逃げ切り、地元大会で優勝を勝ち取った。

　そのデイと2打差の単独2位にはデンマークのトーマス・ビヨン。続く通算7アンダーの単独3位にはデイとチームを組んだアダム・スコットがつけた。さらに米国のマット・クーチャーが通算6アンダーで単独4位につけた。

　日本チームの石川遼と谷原秀人は、石川がこの日2つ伸ばし通算3アンダー5位タイに浮上、一方の谷原は1つ落としてしまい通算2アンダーで7位とした。

　また、チーム戦では1位、3位と上位を独占した地元オーストラリアチームが、2位の米国チームと10打差をつける圧勝で優勝。日本チームは通算5アンダーでデンマークと並び3位タイした。今大会石川、谷原が両方ともが4日間上位をキープ、2人で3位タイという好成績を勝ち取った。

　2016年のリオからゴルフが五輪競技として復活すると決まって間もなくのこと。09年の全米プロで「リオ五輪に出たいか？」と尋ねられたタイガー・ウッズは、その質問にストレートに答えなかった。その代わりにタイガーは、ゴルフと同時に五輪入りが決まったラグビーに話を振って、「僕も頑張ってラグビーチーム入りしたい」と冗談交じりに語ってメディアを煙に巻いた。

　だが、その後、コトは具体的に動いていった。五輪におけるゴルフの競技方法が決まり、2020年の東京五輪開催が決まり、世界のゴルフ界はどんどんその視線を「五輪」へ向けつつある。

　つい先日、フィル・ミケルソンが「今、僕は2016年に向けて取り組んでいる。オリンピック・アスリートになりたいんだ」と語り、話題になった。現在43歳、2016年には46歳になるミケルソンがリオ五輪出場を目標に掲げることが、どれぐらい現実的か否かは本人にも誰にもわからない。が、好成績を出せるかどうかの現実性はさておき、五輪を目指す心意気と姿勢をミドルエイジの選手が抱いているという現実がうれしい。

　とはいえ、五輪競技として復活するゴルフの舞台づくりは完全なる現実性の中で進めていかなければならない。その際、五輪だから五輪委員会任せにするというのではなく、世界の既存のプロゴルフツアー、とりわけ米ツアーが中心になって五輪のための舞台づくり、環境づくりを進めていく。そんな協力体制とその成果が、先週のワールドカップで見て取れた。

　ワールドカップは2人1組のチーム戦として開催されてきた大会だが、今年は五輪におけるフォーマットを意識して個人戦を主体にする形式に変更された。世界ランクに基づいて選出された選手たちが4日間72ホールのストロークプレーでスコアと順位を競い合う。ただし、国別対抗戦のワールドカップという大会の伝統的な性質をいきなり皆無にするのはどうかという意見も尊重し、今大会は各チーム2名のスコアを合算して競うチーム戦も同時に行なった。賞金も個人戦には7ミリオン、団体戦には1ミリオンという配分で、完全に個人戦に重点を置いた五輪対策となった。

　開催コースのロイヤル・メルボルンには米ツアーのティム・フィンチェム会長も赴き、五輪に対する熱い想いを世界へ向けて積極的にアピールした。

　リオのコース整備には若干の遅れが出ているという懸念の声も出ていたが、フィンチェム会長は「舞台づくりは、ほぼ順調に進んでいる」と太鼓判を押した。

　そして、フィンチェム会長が最も強調していたのは、この点だ。

　「リオ五輪はゴルフを五輪で復活させるためのファーストフット（最初の一歩）だ。だからこそ、ファーストクラスの（最高級の）舞台づくりを心がけなければいけない。なぜなら、2016年の五輪の後、ゴルフを五輪競技として定着させるべきかどうかの投票が行われるからだ」

　2016年五輪で失敗は許されない。「最初だから」「不慣れだから」といったエクスキューズも許されない。100年以上ぶりに復活するゴルフを、未来の100年へ、未来永劫へ、つなげていけるかどうか。その運命を左右することになるのが、最初の一歩となるリオ五輪なのだ。

　頭が下がるのは、フィンチェム会長率いる米ツアーや米ゴルフ界が、米国開催ではない五輪に対して真剣な想いを抱き、迅速に動き始めているところだ。ブラジルでも日本でもなく、米国の彼らが「2016年と2020年を主眼に置いて、五輪に備えよう」と必死になっているところだ。

　彼らのすべての原動力は、ゴルフというゲームの繁栄を願う心。国境、国籍を超えてゴルフを愛する広い心。だからこそ、あのミケルソンも「オリンピック・アスリートになりたい」と公言したのだろう。
　
　そんな伏線があったせいか、ワールドカップを眺めながら、気持ちや意識はとかく五輪に向いてしまった。それはフィンチェム会長たちの目論見にはまった証拠。でも、こんな目論見なら是非ともはまりたいと思うほど、彼らのプロモーションはいつも緻密で繊細だ。

　11月24日付けの男子世界ランキングが発表された。先週の国内男子ツアー「ダンロップフェニックス」を6位タイで終えた松山英樹が最新ランキングで25位に浮上。自己最高位を更新した。

　また「ダンロップフェニックス」で単独3位に入った片山晋呉が前週の113位から86位に浮上。一方、「ISPSハンダワールドカップ」に出場した石川遼と谷原秀人も共に順位を上げ、最新ランキングでは石川が88位、谷原が116位となっている。

　その他、「ISPSハンダワールドカップ」で個人戦優勝を果たしたジェイソン・デイ（オーストラリア）が11位に浮上。また「ダンロップフィニックス」で連覇を飾ったルーク・ドナルド（イングランド）が15位に順位を上げている。

【舩越園子コラム】素晴らしき敗者と勝者

　4日間72ホールを最少スコアで回った者が勝利する。それがゴルフの戦いの鉄則だ。本来なら、その「最少スコア」以外に勝敗を左右する基準は存在しない。「誰かが勝つべき」「誰かが勝って然るべき」なんてものもない。

　だが、「あの人に勝ってほしい」「あの人に勝たせたい」という願いや感情は湧いてくる。そして「あの人」に当たる選手本人も「どうしても勝ちたい」「今、ここで、絶対に勝ちたい」という強い感情を胸に抱く。そして、そうなる背景には、さまざまなストーリーが絡んでくる。

　今週、シドニーで開催されたオーストラリアン・オープンは「どうしても、あの人に勝ってほしい。勝たせたい……」という特殊な雰囲気に包まれていた。「あの人」とは、アダム・スコットのこと。彼自身も勝利を願い、母国の人々も彼の勝利を心の底から願っていたのだが、単独首位で最終日を迎えたスコットを抑え込み、ローリー・マキロイが勝利するという大逆転劇が起こった。

　なぜ、スコットの優勝が期待されていたかと言えば、そのワケはオーストラリアが彼の母国という以外にもいろいろあった。ネクスト・タイガーと目され、すぐにでもメジャー優勝と期待されながら、メジャーで惜敗続きだったスコットが、今年、ついにマスターズを制し、メジャーチャンプになった。

　オーストラリア人選手によるマスターズ初制覇。そんな記念の年に、マスターズ優勝以来、初めての帰国となったスコットを母国の人々が大歓迎したのは当然の流れだった。

　だが、スコットは、その帰国を単なる凱旋帰国に留めず、オーストラリアの3大メジャーであるオーストラリアンPGA、オーストラリアン・マスターズを続けざまに制覇。そして挑んだオーストラリアン・オープンで優勝すれば、2005年にロバート・アレンビーが達成したオーストラリアの年間グランドスラム（別称トリプルクラウン）以来の快挙。

その輝かしい瞬間を人々は心待ちにしていた。もちろん、スコット自身も――。

　けれど、スコットから4打差で最終日をスタートしたマキロイがバーディーやイーグルを重ねてスコットに並び、ついには逆転し、スコットが王手をかけていた勝利を奪い取る結果になった。

　今年、不調に喘ぎ、未勝利の1年で終わりかけていたマキロイにとって、この優勝はうれしさもひとしおのはず。だが、彼は自分の喜びよりも「アダムのトリプルクラウン達成を阻んでしまったことが申し訳ない。僕は優勝できたことより、世界のベストプレーヤーであるアダムを倒したことに満足感を覚える」と語った姿が印象的だった。

　勝ちかけた選手、誰もが勝利を信じた選手が、最後に負ける。勝負の世界ゆえ、そんな逆転劇はしばしば起こるものだが、中でも鮮烈だったのは昨年のファーマーズインシュアランス・オープンで、首位を独走していたカイル・スタンリーが最後に大崩れして初優勝を逃し、ブラント・スネデカーが優勝を飾ったあの大逆転劇だった。

　敗者となったスタンリーは、悔しさをこらえきれず、会見で号泣した。勝者となったスネデカーは優勝会見で自分の喜びを語る前に「たとえこの地球上の僕の最大の敵であっても、あんなふうに崩れる悔しさを味わってほしくない」と、敗者を気遣う言葉を口にした。

　オーストラリアン・オープンで最後の最後に敗者になったスコットは、すでに百戦錬磨のベテランで、すでにメジャーチャンプゆえ、経験も実績もプライドも意地もある。何より彼には素晴らしきスポーツマンシップがある。

　「今日はパターが言うことをきいてくれなかった。でも、それがゴルフってものだよ」

　静かにそう語り、マキロイの今年の初勝利を讃えたスコットのグッドルーザーぶり。そしてルーザーを想う勝者マキロイのグッドウイナーぶり。昨年のスネデカー然り。

　大逆転のストーリーは敗者にはきわめて酷ではあるけれど、勝者と敗者の双方が素敵な一面を見せ、人々がゴルフに魅せられる。だから私は、大逆転の物語がとても好きだ。
